    4 Tips to Request Vacation Time at Your New Job

    You’ve just landed a new job, and you’re excited about it. Unfortunately, the timing isn’t the best. You want to take a vacation, and you’re nervous about asking your new boss for a few days off.

    This makes sense, as you want to make a great impression, but this isn’t as big of a deal as you think. Here are a few tips to help you get that well-deserved vacation.

    Don’t Stress

    It’s your first time asking your new boss for time off, but they’ve been on the receiving end of this question many times before. Think of it this way — every time off request from each person on the team goes through them for approval. They’re so used to these requests, and they probably won’t think anything of it.

    Ask During Negotiations

    If you planned a vacation before being hired, let your boss know in advance. This puts it out there from the start, so you don’t have to stress about it one your first few days of work. If your vacation is right around the corner — i.e., a week after your anticipated start date — they might even adjust your first day of work, so your trip doesn’t interfere with onboarding.

    Time It Right

    Life can be unpredictable, so it’s possible you didn’t know you needed this time off when you accepted the job. For example, a family emergency or an event at your child’s school might’ve just presented itself.

    In this case, try to time your request well. Approach your boss when they’re not busy, and ideally after you’ve just done something to impress them. When possible, give them as much notice as possible so that they can plan for your absence.

    Offer a Solution

    Your boss may be a little hesitant to approve your request for time off. For example, if it’s a busy time or you haven’t accrued enough paid vacation days yet, you might receive push back.

    If this happens, be prepared to offer an alternative solution. For example, you might put in extra hours to work ahead before you leave or take the time unpaid. Being flexible can make the situation work for everyone.
