Hot, physical work. Candidates will be working in and around hot furnaces, assisting with putting jobs into and out of the furnace.
In heat-treating, furnace, or thermal-processing shops, a racker is usually the person who loads, arranges (“racks”), and unloads parts for heat treatment.
Typical duties include:
- Preparing parts for processing (cleaning, wiring, fixturing, hanging, or placing them in racks)
- Loading parts into baskets, fixtures, or furnace racks
- Loading and unloading furnaces
- Making sure parts are spaced correctly so heat reaches them evenly
- Preventing parts from warping, sticking together, or getting damaged
- Sorting and packaging parts after processing
- Following safety procedures around high-temperature equipment
In many heat-treat facilities, the racker is an entry-level or production role that supports the heat-treat operators. The heat treater may run the furnace cycles and monitor temperatures, while the racker handles much of the physical movement and setup of the work.
