The Drilling & Engraving Technician sets up and operates drilling, tapping, and engraving equipment (manual and CNC) to produce parts, components, and identification/traceability markings used in products supplied to the mining industry. This role ensures parts meet engineering drawings, quality standards, and production schedules while complying with plant safety procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Set up, program (where applicable), and operate drilling, tapping, and engraving machines (manual, CNC, pantograph, laser or rotary engraving) per work orders, engineering drawings, and job travelers.
- Select and install tools, collets, fixtures, work-holding devices, and consumables appropriate to material and specifications (e.g., steel, hardened alloys, aluminum, plastics, composites).
- Verify and adjust feeds/speeds, tool paths, depth of cut, and coolant/lubrication to achieve dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
- Apply permanent part identification/traceability (e.g., serial numbers, heat/lot codes, logos, directional arrows, safety symbols) using approved engraving or marking methods.
- Confirm text, font, depth, size, orientation, and location meet customer and engineering requirements.
- Interpret blueprints, GD&T, and technical drawings; measure parts using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, pin gauges, and optical comparators.
- Complete first article inspections (FAI) and in-process checks; record results in quality systems or travelers.
- Identify nonconformances and collaborate with Quality on disposition, rework, or corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate job records (setups, offsets, tool life, scrap/rework, lot numbers).
- Perform routine preventive maintenance (e.g., cleaning chips, checking coolant/oil levels, replacing worn tools, inspecting belts/hoses/guards).
- Support 5S and continuous improvement (kaizen) activities to reduce setup time, improve throughput, and minimize scrap.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational training in machining, CNC, or manufacturing preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in machine operation (drilling/tapping/engraving) in a manufacturing environment; CNC experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.
- Proficiency with precision measurement tools and basic math/trigonometry.
- Basic computer skills for machine interfaces, DNC systems, and ERP data entry. Experience engraving metal components for industrial applications (e.g., rotary/laser engravers, CNC engraving paths).
- Experience with mining-industry materials (hardened steels, wear-resistant alloys, tungsten carbide-backed components) and surface treatments is preferred.
- Familiarity with CAM and G-code editing; ability to optimize toolpaths and cycle times.
- Previous work in a quality-managed environment (e.g., ISO 9001).
- Forklift and overhead crane experience is preferred.
- Frequent standing, walking, reaching, handling parts/tools; occasional kneeling/crouching.
- Lift/carry/push/pull up to [50] lbs. with/without accommodation.
- May require shift work, overtime, and weekend coverage based on production demand
