Summary
We are looking for mission-minded, individuals committed to improving the lives of children and their families through individualized, family oriented education. The Middle and High School (Upper School) Teacher promotes the social, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of the children under his/her care and works with the City Schoolhouse staff to create an environment of joyful exploratory learning and engaging the family in the learning process at home and in the classroom.
Must live or plan to live in or around the Louisville, KY area.
This teacher will guide students to mastery in basic academic, social, and other formative skills at the elementary level. He/she will guide, lead, and mentor students to know, understand, and do high level work, meeting national standards for education for grades 6-12, and training them in a cross disciplinary approach. Guiding them through internship opportunities, college classes, and individualized learning plans.
Duties
Measurement
- Record attendance and/or tardies for each student
- Identify and set Knowledge, Understand and Do (KUD) targets in areas of social studies, math, language arts, and science for all elementary students
- Develop target-based assessments (TBA)
- Use TBA to assess the whole-student (examples include but are not limited to: academic, work ethic, care of self/others, organization)
- Create Badge Scales for Math, Geography, Learn to Be, Science, Reading, Writing, and Arts/Humanities for elementary.
Communication
- Monthly communication with families about the month ahead (sent in adequate time for any necessary planning)
- Bi-Monthly written correspondence with parents related to student progress/opportunities from mentor meetings by EOB on Friday
- Weekly Team Meetings with fellow teachers
- Monthly meeting with Head of School
- Regular communication and planning with kitchen manager to ensure effective teaching plans in and out of the kitchen
- Communication with special educators/volunteers and collaboration for student success
- Conduct Bi-Annual parent/teacher/student conferences
- Documenting incident reports and keeping accurate records
Instruction
- Lesson planning to ensure effective instruction that meets targets for each student
- Execution of lesson plans in partial lecture, primarily a hands-on active learning approach
- Ensuring that learning is full of joy and students are learning what they NEED and what they LOVE
- Providing lesson plans to the Early Childhood Teacher for Core Skills and Project time when not present
- Generate assignments for AT HOME STUDY days if necessary
- Develop new and innovative Project Ideas and TBAs for those projects
Preparation
- Be at school no later than 7:45 am and depart no earlier than 4:00 to ensure successful execution of the school day
- Ensure that shelves are being rotated monthly and correspond with new material being taught
- Pre-read all materials students are asked to read
- Lesson plans need to be turned in at least one week prior to assignment – Daily plans broken out by schedule and topics (see example)
Professional Development
- You will be expected to participate in no less than (10) professional development opportunities throughout the course of the calendar year.
- Professional Development Readings: Complete 1 per semester (Love and Logic in the Classroom / Thomas Jefferson Education Model/Courage to Grow/ YouTube Socratic Method Training/Unschooling Rules/The Nurture Shock/The One World Schoolhouse)
Classroom Care
- Create a clean and tidy place of beauty where learning can thrive, and people are inspired
- Ensure that all materials are respected, cleaned, and well maintained
- Secure all materials of value are locked away
- Daily sweeping, vacuuming, surfaces wiped down, bathrooms cleaned, and trash taken out
General
- Any various tasks that are necessary for the safety and successful execution of the school business specifically as it relates to students.
- Compliance with all regulatory expectation on reporting — (not limited to Child Abuse and Neglect, Mental Health concerns, safety incidents, peer to peer situations)
Work Environment
- The person in this position will work in an office environment the majority of the time, including “out of the schoolhouse” learning. We embrace an all-weather policy at the school and that requires being outside daily to supervise the students.
